About Us

The West Central Community Development Group is a 501C3 nonprofit organization, organized in early 2004, to address the needs of the West central neighborhoods and businesses.

WCCDG was founded in 2004 as part of Albuquerque’s Metropolitan Redevelopment Area plan for the West Central corridor-an area long affected by poverty and disinvestment. From the start, our mission has been clear: to bring opportunity, investment, and community pride to the Southwest Mesa.

Our roots reach further back. Before the MRA existed, a small group of committed neighbors several of whom would later form WCCDG-organized the Alamosa Neighborhood Association, the first in the area. They went on to help establish the Southwest Alliance of Neighbors (SWAN), uniting residents across the Mesa to push for basic infrastructure other communities already had, including sidewalks, street lighting, and community centers. Their efforts led to the creation of the Alamosa Community Center and laid the groundwork for what would become the West Central Community Development Group.

When the MRA plan was implemented, these same volunteers helped attract developments that transformed West Central. They supported bringing in El Super, Dion’s, and multiple shopping centers-investments that created jobs, expanded access to groceries, and brought long-awaited retail options. They also helped secure funding for a new fire station, the Central and Unser Library, the Rio Grande overlooks on the West Central bridge, and the now-iconic neon arches that welcome residents and visitors to the corridor. These milestones reshaped daily life for families who had been overlooked for generations.

Today, WCCDG carries this mission forward through a volunteer board, a full-time Executive Director, and two part-time community liaisons. For more than two decades, we have worked to build a stronger, safer, and more vibrant West Central and we remain committed to serving this community with honesty, transparency, and dedication.

WCCDG is a non-profit, non-partisan group of community leaders, residents, and business owners working together to ensure the West Central area continues to grow as a thriving place to live, work, and gather.

Community Leadership

We believe in building the power and leadership of communities in West Central by fostering connections and supporting civic participation by all residents, in particular those who have traditionally been marginalized . We believe community residents should have a decisive voice in shaping the future of their communities, their own lives, and have the ability to create local organizations through which they can work together to achieve common goals.
